Landfill Going Green

Posted on 05/18/2009

The Cedar Hills landfill located in Maple Valley is the only landfill used by King County. 2,500 tons of garbage from the Seattle area are deposited everyday. Most people think of a landfill as a place where garbage is put in the ground and covered up with dirt. Fortunately, this is not the case for Cedar Hills. It is one of few landfills in the United States that is using new environmentally friendly techniques to help preserve the environment. One of these techniques captures the harmful methane gas that is released by the landfill,  and burns it before it enters the atmosphere. Another technique collects the contaminated runoff water, and filters it before it enters rivers and streams, thus release clean environmentally friendly water. For more information click here.
